This is the installation for the exhibition "Anti Gravity" at Toyota Municipal Museum of Art. It is the self-sustaining structure designed with the motif of "Dance" painted by Henri Matisse. "Dance" by Matisse is the painting that persons are dancing while holding hands and making a circle. I do not know what meaning is put into it, but I feel a space and a balance of power in it. I think that dancing is a challenge to gravity in a sense. Especially ballet seems to aim for a way of standing, a way of moving and a way of flying that does not feel gravity in audience by exercising the body to the limit. We are attracted to dancers' light and beautiful movements, but on the other hand we strongly feel that how difficult it is to defy gravity by the shape, size and movement of dancers' unusual muscles. In other words, I think we feel the presence of overwhelming gravity and we find lightness, freedom and beauty in the tight relationship between gravity and the physical body rather than directly feeling floating feeling. Although a dancer can be hanged high by wire, it is difficult to find freedom from gravity there. Therefore, I intended to aim for freedom from gravity by facing to gravity honestly. When both ends of a straight piano wire are connected by solder, a repulsive force produces a clean round ring. The about 1.8m height pillar is made by joining 18 rings of 104 mm in diameter made in this way vertically with solder. In order to minimize the structural load due to its own weight, the thickness of the piano wire is made thinner as going up. Furthermore, the cylinder with a diameter of 10.4 m is made by connecting the pillars horizontally. Although the pillar is not self-sustaining structure, it becomes self-sustaining structure by joining together in one cylindrical shape. The repulsive power preserved in each of the 22,000 rings which were made by many volunteers makes the self-sustaining structure as a whole.
