A space like clothes

This is the space for the exhibition "Landscape of Structure”. The exhibit is from the series "STANDARD" by 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE, which incorporates origami structures into its design. The clothes are made of a single piece of folded fabric that transforms into a three-dimensional shape that envelops the body. Perhaps because the clothes have such a geometric and beautiful appearance that they do not look like clothes when they are flat, they strongly evoke a certain Japanese aesthetic sense in which wearing and folding are equivalent. As a space to introduce such clothes to Thailand, we conceived a white hill-like space using the fabric (recycled polyester) used for STANDARD. The location was an island-like space in the middle of a shopping mall's corridor, with a low rectangular stand and a round pillar in the middle. We created a large, gently sloping surface by stretching 35 pieces of fabric cut into trapezoids to connect the perimeter of the stand to the pillar. Folded clothes and origami paper in which the material of the clothes is replaced with cardboard are scattered on the abstract hill that looks like a large piece of clothing worn in the exhibition space. Although this is an exhibition of clothing, we hoped that it would be one that would allow visitors to experience the beauty and mystery created by the structure of STANDARD, just as they would when observing an unfamiliar plant or stone in nature.

服のような空間

「Landscape of Structure」展のための空間です。展示するのは132 5. ISSEY MIYAKEによる折り紙の構造をデザインに取り入れたSTANDARDというシリーズの服です。その服は一枚の布が折り畳まれた平面の状態から立体に変形し身体を包み込みます。平面の状態では服には思えないほど幾何学的で美しい佇まいをしているせいか、着ることと畳むことが等価であるというある種の日本的な美意識が強く感じられる服です。そのような服をタイに紹介するための空間として、STANDARDに使われている生地（再生ポリエステル）を使い白い丘のような空間を考えました。場所は商業施設の通路の中央に中洲のようにあるスペースで、長方形をした低い台が設置されていて、中央に丸い柱が1本立っていました。そこで、展示台の外周と柱を繋ぐように35枚の台形状にカットした生地を張ることで、緩い傾斜のある大きな面をつくりました。展示スペースに着せられた大きな服のようにも見える抽象的な丘の上に、畳まれた状態の服とその服の素材を厚紙に置き換えた折り紙が点在しています。衣服の展示ではあるけれども、自然の見知らぬ植物や石などを観察するようにSTANDARDの構造が生み出す美しさや不思議さを感じてもらえる展示になればと考えました。
