Countless One-offs

These pieces were created as part of the SOKEI project, which began in 2024. SOKEI is a project in which five artists, working with Koshin Planning, explore the uses of their fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printer. I collaborated with Koshin Planning to create a program that outputs two-dimensional shapes of varying shapes and sizes each time. I then printed these automatically generated shapes directly to create cylindrical three-dimensional objects. While the output objects have no limited use, for this exhibition, I printed 30 of them and stacked them between a wall and a column, using them as a wall to gently divide the space. Ultimately, I envision a system where, with a click of a button on a website, the object is automatically generated. By entering the depth dimension, a serial number and price are displayed, and the purchase process proceeds. It might be similar to the feeling of acquiring stone and creating gardens and buildings. The surface of the printed object exhibits a unique texture that visualizes the printing process, and this texture also evokes the accumulation of time inherent in stone. Even though they are infinitely available, no two are exactly alike. A product that seems to exist somewhere between something valuable and something not, between a mass-produced object and a one-of-a-kind piece. This printer made me imagine something like that.

無数の一点物

2024年から始まったSOKEIというプロジェクトで制作したものです。SOKEIは、光伸プランニングさんが所有する熱溶解積層方式3Dプリンターの使い方を5人の作家が光伸プランニングさんと一緒に模索するというものです。私は、毎回形や大きさが異なる平面図形を出力するプログラムを光伸プランニングさんと作成し自動生成した図形をプリンターでそのまま出力し筒状の立体をつくりました。出力された立体は、用途を限定しませんが、今回の展示では30個出力し、壁と柱の間に挟まるように積み上げて、空間をゆるやかに区切る壁として用いています。最終的には、購入者がウェブサイト上でボタンをクリックすると図形が自動生成され、その図形に対し奥行寸法を入力すると、通し番号と価格が表示され、購入手続きに進む、そうした仕組みの実現を構想しています。それは、石を手に入れ、庭や建築をつくる感覚に近いかもしれません。造形物の表面には造形プロセスが視覚化されたようなこのプリンター特有の質感が現れますが、その質感も石が内包する時間の蓄積を思わせます。無限に入手できるにもかかわらず、同じものは二つとない。価値があるようなないような、量産品と一点物のあいだに位置するプロダクト。このプリンターから、そんなことを想像しました。
